Really love Suleika Jaouad's writing. I was super late to discovering her work (her voice! and the ease that she always seems to bring into her writing), but I'm glad I've arrived. Your perspective on chronic/long-term illness was also encouraging to read and I'm glad you found yourself getting lost in Jaouad's retelling. I'll definitely look into reading her memoir.
I only discovered her recently too! I completely agree her voice and ease to her writing is sensational, she is beyond talented. Thank you for finding it encouraging to read 🥹 that means a lot. It’s a very hard thing! I’m glad I found her too, I love her Substack too. A real beacon of calm, warmth and hope. She’s truly inspiring with the life she leads alongside so many health obstacles. As soon as I found her it felt a little less daunting thinking about the future and leading a full and happy life with chronic/long term health issues. I would definitely recommend her memoir! Let me know when you read it 💖
Having spent a year in the shadow of the Pyrenees, I’m looking forward to reading When I Sing, Mountains Dance. The idea of narrating the story from various non-human perspectives, like a cloud or a bear, is truly fascinating. Thanks for the recommendation! 📖☁️
Reading ‘When I Sing’ in the shadows of the Pyrenees would be amazing Zio! Such a wonderful opportunity to connect fiction to real life surroundings - I am envious! The narration in the novel is truly fascinating, I was amazed at the authors imagination! Let me know what you think of it once you’ve had a chance to read it! 🩷
Chain Gang All Stars needs to be so much more widely read! I think about it constantly and read it almost a year ago at this point. Added the first two to my list—had not heard of either!!
It was SO good! Me too - I read it last July and every now and then I get lost in a thought tunnel just thinking about how well it was paced, written and imagined. I really want to read ‘Friday Black’ by them soon too, I’ve heard such great things. And I’m happy to have introduced you to two you hadn’t heard of aswell! 🩷
