Welcome to Martha’s Monthly! A monthly newsletter where I discuss what I’ve been reading. With a love for translated and diverse fiction, this newsletter is for readers who want to make their reading life more interesting.

I have always been a reader, but when I got diagnosed with a major health condition, reading became the only hobby I could enjoy from the confinement of my bed. Consequently, I fell so much more in love with reading and wanted an outlet to talk about it outside of my friends and family. I wanted to create a community and to put my ever growing reading knowledge to service: to let you know what is worth reading, and what is not.

To help give you an idea of what kind of books I read, you can find all my 2023 reads here and all my 2024 reads here. Alternatively, the full archive of everything I’ve written for Martha’s Monthly can be found here.

I love translated fiction. If you want to see what countries I have, and haven’t (yet) read books from, here’s my Map:

What to expect from this newsletter?

My goal is to let you know whether the books I read are worth it to pick up. I aim to read books that are less well known, interesting and translated.

As a subscriber you will receive:

  • My monthly reads on the 1st of every month.

  • (any book posts outside of this schedule are a bonus treat. they may come now and then.)

Praise from readers of ‘Martha’s Monthly’:

★ Martha’s Monthly is recommended by author and icon

in her newsletter ‘Extracurricular’ as a great place to find new books in this post.

from ‘Subverse’ says: ‘[Martha’s Monthly] will get you to consider books you might never have before, expose you to new writers, and make you think.’

★ Writer

from 'Cherry Bomb' recommends Martha’s Monthly as a ‘must-read for book lovers. She takes care to read and curate book offerings from around the world’

: ‘Martha’s Monthly’ offers in-depth reviews heavy on world literature in translation and I’m always impressed by the amount she reads and the way she tries to understand each work based upon what the author was trying to achieve and the significance of its themes. Yet she never loses sight of her own experience as a reader, reflected in her “buy, borrow, bust” framework for rating each read.’ in this post.

[Martha] reads such a diverse array of books, and every time I read one of her posts I feel encouraged to try new genres and authors and languages, and I admire all the work she does to encourage translation!’
